11 of my Favorite Designs

Now, I should clarify… every last one of these is mine. A bit narcissistic I’m sure, but for a good cause. I’ve been trying to break through this mental block and come up with a new, magical design for this blog here. Once I get this block out of the way I feel like I’ll be able to tackle this forum that’s been giving me more problems than anything (but that’s another story for another day).

I remember being so much more creative, back before I started worrying about making everything standards compliant and all that, so I decided to dip back into my old archive folders for a little bit of inspirations. I came across some layouts that were absolutely horrendous… I can’t figure out how I ever passed some of these off! But some, I’m still proud of, months and years later, so I thought I’d share eleven of them with you.

01: Anachronism (Unwritten)

Back in the day, when I had a subdomain on someone else’s site, this was probably the first worthwhile layout I ever created. It’s horrendously coded and probably held together with prayers and e-duct tape, but man I was proud of it at the time! The coolest thing about this layout is that it sparked a friendship (yes, I’m looking at you, LB) that lasts to this day, even if we’re both busy ALLTHETIME. It’s not even really my style, but I love it. (more…)

Wow, remember Xanga?

I was talking to James yesterday and he told me that he had rediscovered xanga. I kind of mentally rolled my eyes at him; who needs that pre-myspace site when we (okay, so I) can have amazing and epic blogs of awesomeness? And Facebook??

I went back over there, just now. Yes, to xanga. To see what it’s like over there. And well, they’ve overhauled the main site quite a bit, and added lots of layout-y goodness. Hey, wonder if my account is still on there?

Oh yes. Both of them are. And I started rereading a few entries (I quit xanga right after camp 2005) and was really amazed how conversational I was back then.

I feel so formal on my amazing and epic blog of awesomeness. I want to rant and ramble about anything like I did back in the heyday of all the t-staters rampaging around xanga. Therefore I must, before I get sucked back into the world before Facebook.

Bloggiesta?

I came across a blogging event yesterday called Bloggiesta… a 48-hour period in which you pretty much overhaul your blog. You can clean things up, change the layout, reorganize, write advance posts, or even just work on your social networking sites (facebook, twitter) and so forth.

The date is Friday, June 19th beginning at 8am, Saturday the 20th and ending Sunday the 21st at 8am (8am your time, wherever you are).  That is a total of 48 hours, of which you should aim high for a total of 18-24 hours spent on the challenge.

I really want to try it. It’s just that I’m shying away from Internet committments at this point (I’m WAY behind on a project) and don’t want to commit to it just to drop out.

So I think I’m going to do it… I’m just not going to “sign up” at the site and say I’m doing it. I’m just going to DO it. But first, I need to get this project out of the way.

But I really do plan on overhauling this site. I really really miss having my blog. Terribly! The only thing really holding me back right this moment is a website I promised to a very close friend… and it’s taking me epic amounts of time to get it done (curses on daily life, I swear).

To Do:

  1. Finish the Israel site.
  2. Work on this site.
  3. Get my portfolio up.
  4. Revamp Mom’s site.

I’m awful, I really am. Well, back to work. And by the way, greetings from Pennsylvania!

Two Thousand Nine

Happy New Year! And Happy New Blog, too!

Last year I made two New Year’s resolutions, and it was the first time I seriously attempted this. The first was personal, but I’d like to say that it was a partial success. In fact… not a bad job.

The second one I did share last year, and it was a wish to get my life moving again. Specifically, go to college. My first, knee-jerk reaction is that I failed on this completely, but the more I reflect back on it, the more I realized that I didn’t completely fail. No, I’m not in college. No, I’m not really any closer to going to college. No, I haven’t even taken another online class.

But it seems like the more that I push for it, the more I feel something pushing back. I know it sounds like a cop-out, but I’m starting to believe that I’m not supposed to be there just yet, for whatever reason. I’ve been focusing a lot on my job, and you know what? In the last year, I’ve gotten a major promotion and a three-dollar pay raise. For my first job, that’s not too bad. I’m management now, working full time. I have insurance.

This leads me up to next year’s resolutions.

  1. A continuation of last year’s personal resolution. I hate to be secretive, but it’s not something I particularly enjoy talking about.
  2. My license. It’s completely pathetic and inexcusable that I don’t have this (and a car) yet. Seriously.
  3. Work towards moving out. I SO want to be independent; it’s just a matter of getting the money to do so. This will involve putting money into savings and keeping it there.
  4. Create five terrific WordPress themes and give them away. If I want to someday do some freelance web design, I’ve got to get my  name out there.
  5. Finish a novel. Whether this means finishing Seasons Past or putting down an idea I’ve had recently (actually LB and I are starting a writing contest with each other this month), I just need to write more.
  6. Blog every day this year. If Amanda can do it, I can too.

So, six things. We’ll see how this goes, okay?

Time Capsule 2005

At the beginning of November 2005, I joined this website where you could create a time capsule of sorts to be sent to you a certain amount of time later. I filled mine out, and set it to three years; it would come to me at the end of October 2008, a date that seemed so far into the future that I was sure to forget about it. Well, I did. Thankfully, though, the email I used for mine is one I still use to sign up for things so I don’t get a bunch of spam in my normal email. I needed to duck into there for a confirmation email one day, and saw this sitting up near the top.

Today I opened it. I’m not going to post the entire thing because some parts are kind of personal, but a lot of it was a pretty interesting look into who I was and to who I hoped to become.

Current
Age: eighteen
height: five six – ish
status: single and not looking… too much.
hobbies: web and graphic design, blogging, writing, crochet, sewing, DANCE

The basics haven’t changed, except now I’m 21 and don’t have time for the crocheting and the sewing very often. I don’t dance as much as I think I used to, either… which makes me kinda sad. (more…)
